Nigeria
Background
The Federal Republic of Nigeria is located in West Africa and is the most populous country on the continent with more than 80 million inhabitants. Following nearly 16 years of military rule, a new constitution was adopted in 1999, and a peaceful transition to civilian government was completed. Nigeria faces the daunting task of reforming a petroleum-based economy, whose revenues have been squandered through corruption and mismanagement, and institutionalizing democracy.
Nigeria is currently experiencing its longest period of civilian rule since independence. Nigeria’s infrastructure is rapidly developing. Since 2000, internet usage has increased by 2400%. There is still a lot of work to be done as most of the development is in urban areas and 97% of the population is still without internet access.
World Links in Nigeria
The World Links Telecenter Project in Nigeria is our newest project. In collaboration with Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN), World Links is going to open 8 school-based and 2 community-based internet learning centers (ILCs) in Akwa Ibom state. The MPN-funded ILCs will play a critical role in generating economic and social opportunities for citizens of Akwa Ibom state. By offering improved education, training, information resources and other services to students, out-of-school youth and members of the broader community, the partnership project will develop a cadre of community members equipped with skills to compete in the workforce and establish a sustainable small business model ensuring continued access to ICT and other related services by community members. This project will also raise community awareness of the social and economic value of MPN presence in Akwa Ibom state. At the end of the two year project, results will include 10 self-sustaining ILCs (eight school and two community-based) able to recover recurrent costs from fee-based services and/or community and other stakeholder support.
