Dominican Republic

Background

The Dominican Republic is a small country located in the Caribbean Sea on the Island of Hispaniola. It is bordered by Haiti. The Dominican Republic was claimed by Christopher Columbus on his first voyage in 1492, the island of Hispaniola became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland. The Dominican Republic has been primarily as an exporter of sugar, coffee, and tobacco, but in recent years the service sector has overtaken agriculture as the economy's largest employer due to growth in tourism and free trade zones.

Like most countries in the world, the Dominican Republic has shown tremendous growth in the technology sector. Since the year 2000, internet usage has grown 1600% with 18.9% of the population having access to the World Wide Web.

World Links in the Dominican Republic

World Links has had a strong history in the Dominican Republic. With funding from TaiwanICDF and Microsoft, nine school-based telecenters were openned in 2005. This School Based Telecenter Program was a finalist for the Development Gateway Award in 2006. TaiwanICDF also funded a teacher professional developmnet program in the country.

The Ministry of Education has taken the telecenter model as an example to replicate at other centers. Nine regional coordinators have been contracted to continue the telecenter project. These regional coordinators will make the sure that the telecenter is a model that is practical in order to make the integration of new centers into communities successful. The SEE wants to expand the project to every school that is interested and willing to work hard to make the project successful.
