Ghana
World Links has been active in Ghana since 1997. Initially the program was introduced in ten schools in Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi.
World Links teamed up with Schools Online to expand the pilot program in Ghana from 14 to 31 schools. The 17 new schools received computers and networking equipment from Schools Online. World Links provided teacher training, lab installation support, ongoing local pedagogical support for teachers, and funding for independent evaluation of program impact.
At the progam's peak, World Links was active in 31 schools in five of the country's ten administrative regions, with over 300 teachers and almost 9,000 students actively involved. Eleven telecollaborative projects were completed. In 2001 one of the projects that World Links schools in Ghana have been working on -- Lab's Alive -- was nominated for a prestigious Stockholm Challenge Award recognizing innovative use of ICT around the world.
The World Links program in Ghana is proof that introducing technology in schools in Africa can work, and can make a difference. Students in schools with poorly stocked libraries now have access to a wealth of educational resources on the Internet. By linking to alumni groups using the Internet, schools have been able to receive support from school leavers, both inside Ghana and from around the world. The collaborative projects have led to increased interaction between participating schools and their local communities.
The World Links program in Ghana would like to thank the following organizations for their support: AfricaOnline, Fan Milk Ghana Limited, Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ghana Telecom, Leland Initiative (USAID), Metropolitan and Allied Bank, NCS, The Partnership, Private Enterprise Foundation, Providence Insurance Company, Standard Chartered Bank, Schole Online, Tema Oil Refinery.
